This song is based on several early sources of the way to destroy an enemy by turning the nature spirits against them These sources include a runic inscription from Bergen and Egil's Saga The process involved raising a hazel staff topped with a horses decapitated head, with the mouth opened in a gruesome grimace All this was performed whilst uttering the correct formulas, which were carved into the hazel rod Not an honest way to attack an enemy The lyric is weitten in alliteration (as were many skaldik verses), the only proper sort of ryme for this subject]
